How to rearrange photos from a trip
I always tell people who go on a trip to take lots of photos, simply because photos are the most tangible memento.
However, in the digital age in which we live, it is even more important to catalog and reorder them, given the lightness with which we take pictures every day.
So here are some steps to follow to give our vacation photos the space and importance they deserve.
0. Delete
Delete the worst photos immediately. The sooner you delete bad photos, the more time you will save and the more efficient your photo organization will be. Delete blurry, poorly composed or just plain ugly photos while they are still on your camera or smartphone.
1. Transfer
It is time to take them out of the camera and smartphone and move them to a safe place. We need to transfer to our computer or to the cloud all the pictures we have taken, coming from different devices: cell phone, camera, action camera…
If you have an iPhone, with Airdrop it is very easy to select and transfer your pictures to your computer. Or you can send them to yourself by email or even by physically connecting your cell phone to the computer with a USB cable.
For cameras, the quickest method remains the supplied cable, or, if your computer has the insertion tray, you can slip out the memory card and insert it. We can later choose whether to keep them in our computer or move them to an external hard drive, thumb drive or in Cloud storage system such as Google Drive, Dropbox or Amazon Photos.
2. Organize
Name your folders with a keyword and a date: always include the name of the event or destination as well. I prefer to always enter the year as the first part of the name, for example “2019 – AUSTRIA by bike “. Why? That way, when you sort the folders by name, they will automatically appear in chronological order. Clever, isn’t it? If you want, after the destination, you can specify the division of photos by device.
(for example: Anna’s phone, Claudio’s camera, Canon, etc.).
3. Select
Another way to make your life easier later is to add a recognition indicator for the best photos: a color, a dot, a star. In the Mac with the right button you can assign a color, in the computer with the dedicated button, a star. So when you want to share them or review only the most beautiful you can skip all the others and see your favorites directly.
4. Share
Want to send them to your fellow travelers? You can prepare a Google Drive or Dropbox link.
Want to share them on social? If you post it and use a tag or location, you can then click on it and browse all the people who have passed through the same place as you! Even if you post it months apart you can use the hashtags #memories #summer #tb #throwback and share the memory you have of that moment.
5. Print
We have lost the habit, but printing your most beautiful photos allows you to always have them, use them to decorate your home, show them to friends even offline, and be sure they will not be lost.
You can print them online, or at photography and printing stores, or at the various services found in supermarkets.
In the first case, there are several websites that allow you to make these products online and in minutes. This can also be a useful idea for making unforgettable personalized gifts, for example:
- Lalalab for lovers of Polaroid cutting
- Tonki, if you want to turn them into cardboard frames for hanging.
- Blurb, if you want to layout and print a photo album. Imagine the collection of all your travels as if they were a series of books!
So are you going to dedicate some time to re-posting photos in the coming weeks? If you find some good ones, we remind you that you can enter our photo contest.
